The most common causes of central heating system failure are those resulting from corrosion, scale and microbiological contamination.

Whilst there are products designed to resolve these problems the best solution is prevention through the correct flushing and treatment at installation.
The kinds of problems that can be encountered are:

Corrosion affects all water systems with metallic components. The rate of corrosion and possibility of component failure will be determined by materials used in installation; water quality; system design and the operating characteristics of the system.
Pitting can lead to perforation which causes leaks or even  sludge build-up. This in turn causes blockages in pipes and radiators, pump and boiler problems and ultimately system failure.
Did you know that 1.6mm of scale build-up in heating systems will cause a 12% loss in heating efficiency. With  65% of the UK is situated in a hard water area, scale should be major concern for every home owner.

Over the years, scale forms around heating coils and causes boilers to  run longer and hotter in order to heat the water. This needs more energy as it needs to heat the water through the scale.

Scale also reduces the life of hot water cylinders, showers, washing machines, immersion heaters and increases maintenance and repair costs.
Fitting a simple scale reducer can drastically reduce both the energy and maintainance cost of your home.

Microbiological contamination
Central heating systems can be susceptible to biological fouling by bacteria or mould growths.

These leathery skins or films caused by fungal growth can be found on the surface of expansion cisterns.

Analysis of the system water will highlight the cause of the problem, and if done early on will identify any risk before significant damage occurs to any component.
