WATER CONSERVATION

Climate change and Major house-building programmes are placing an additional strain on supplies in the South East, where some reservoirs well below the levels that they should be.

In March 2006 a water company in Southern England applied for “water scarcity status” They were given the go-ahead by the government to force 65,000 householders to install water meters.

At the time the Environment Agency said they were in favour of compulsory metering in Southern England and,  although this caused some controversy, the environment minister insisted that water meters would not be compulsory in the UK accept where needed in areas suffering from water shortages.

Here are a few water saving ideas:

  • Reducing the flow rate to individual water outlets
  • Use water saving devices that reduce water on each wc flush
  • Get leaking taps fixed rather than leaving them for another day
  • Install a pressure reducing valve on the incoming water supply
  • Hot water circulation, if waiting for hot water to arrive at the taps
  • Adequate lagging of the hot water cylinder and hot water pipes
